Abstract

The paper defines the concepts of Hadith & Sunnah and discusses its connotative difference. It compiles Quranic Verses of the concepts of Hadith, sunnah and discrimination between these two concepts. It includes denotative meanings and explanation. The paper also discusses the scholar’s viewpoint of its terms. Hadith and Sunnah are generally taken as synonymous terms. This is not a correct impression. The concepts of Hadith and Sunnah have entirely different connotations as well as denotative meanings, and each one holds a different status in Quran, therefore, assigning the same meaning to both the terms, it would create a lot of complications. Sunnah is concerned only with urgent matters and the acts that are intimately related, banned and that continues in civilization. Whereas, the hadeeth is not related to an explanation of the matter that are performed on a regular basis. In the Qur'anic understanding, the Sunnah is not applicable to the Hadith and the Hadith is not applicable to the Sunnah, both words have different meanings and concepts. It implies that every hadith cannot be considered as sunnah and vice versa. Whereas, the scholars often assume the concepts of Hadith and sunnah are same based on its terminology.
